Great engine.
Great music.
Great images!
You have a lovely style, and while the gameplay isn't the best (I'm
sure it only needs a bit of tweaking really) I think you've made something
very interesting with a lot of potential. Looking forward to your future
projects!

This is excellent! Cactus is a huge indie-inspiration and
you've made a great port (imho even surpassing the original,
it somehow seems... smoother).

Oh and the review below (by Fantomass) is hilarious!

Author's Response:

Thanks a lot mate =). It's a shame that most people don't understand the style, but hey, we were expecting a mixed reception, and the positive responses still make it worth while.

Well, first of all, in the editor, you can't scroll using the keyboard, which is really annoying. It will only let you scroll a few tiles before stopping when you hold a key down. The camera was also very jerky in-game. When the character got outside of the screen he would be thrown back with a constant value and the camera shifted resulting in a very odd, jerky movement. Also, in the pre-made sonic game the hero was to wide to fall through the gaps, it looks funny. I was kind of dissapointed that there was so few tile-textures (about five? for each tileset) and only two kind of enemies? And why didn't you hook up with some cool artist (can't be too hard here on NG) to make you the graphics instead of using stolen sprites? And why oh why did you use the ng-preloader? You made this huge behemoth and then you used a pre-made preloader? Surely you must know how to make a preloader? It's like three lines of code. One final thing, the actual map-data. It's HUGE. I can't believe you're actually storing it like that! You're wasting so much space (on you're site's DB). Have you heared of RLE encoding? It would do wonders, google it! (run length encoding).

Author's Response:

You remind me of someone I know who knows absolutley nothign about coding, but his brother does. He always braggs about this and that, this and that without ever really knowing what the hell he's going on about, just stuff he's heard form his brother.
RLE encoding would be absolutely pointless in this scenario. The levels are stored in blocks of 14, the 0's being used for measurements in game during runtime to allow for variable sized blocks/speeds etc, so the code is constantly manipulated by the engine. Use of RLE would meannot being able to do this in real time. So here's and idea. Shut up. Reason 'camera' was jerky? cause your computer sucks.
Why use the NG preloader? 1: because its near as damn well efficient as a preloader can be. 2: its to the point - no waiting for the preloader to load. 3: This game is sponsored by newgrounds.
You can use the keys to scroll as much as you want, it does the same as the arrows. Oh noes..my sites DB can't handle a 2kb string whatever will I do in this day and age of 28k modems...

Game of Life

"Nice one! :)"

You should have made it possible to change the rules from 23/3 to whatever you'd like. Also you should have added some "gliders" or some other interesting shapes in the initial setup. But really I'm just nitpicking, this is a very good implementation of the game of life :) Sweet.

"Brilliant game"

Hi rubilon,
First of all - both art and music is awsome. I like the mix of skill and
puzzle, although some of the levels are driving my crazy. :)
It would definitely be nice to get access to that map editor! I hope you
plan to release it, maybe in a sequel? Congratulations to the front page,
I'm looking forward to playing more games from you.
/ Kianis from flashkit :P

Author's Response:

OMG! Front page already?

The Gayest Showdown

"no one-line summary"

date: January 17, 2006

Haha, furries do indeed fail at life, but not nearly as much as most of the reviewers of this movie :D Don't mind them - remeber, even pure masterpieces as 8-bitch:EvilOnTheAttack and Arfenhouse are either misunderstood and hated or loved for the wrong reasons - which in fact only makes them even funnier. I LOLed.

"Sorry, this is really bad"

date: December 21, 2005

Sorry, but this is really bad. Total crap, you could have included more names, better verbs etc even, but this actually deserved blaming IMHO. I don't get what glaiel_gamer helped you with, here's this app's AS summarized in _two_ lines of code:

adjectives.split(","); names.split(","); verbs.split(","); nouns.split(",");
asd.text = strName + "\r" + adjectives[random(adjectives.length)] + "\r" + names[random(names.length)] + "'s\r" + verbs[random(verbs.length)] + " " + nouns[random(nouns.length)];

"Hungarian Notation, yay! ;D"

date: December 14, 2005

First of all - I didn't play through the game, but I'll be sure to do so later. Second - I've got to admit, I fell in love as soon as I saw you used hungarian notation! XD
It is obvious that you are very talented in another language (c, c++, java?), flash should be a piece of cake for you. What I don't get is why you wouldn't use tiles though? Other than that the game is a excellent piece of work considering it's a project to learn flash.
You really should join the General Help > Games forum at flashkit, there you'll find several flashgurus (including Strille, André-Michelle, Tonypa, Stimunation Team etc etc :) ). Also, feel free to take a look at my game ^^ Good luck on future programming!
